Tuscany runs from coastal plains through inland hills to the edges of the mountains, so a single Tuscan bottle can come from warm ground near the sea or from cooler, higher land inland. That breadth is the catch with the word Toscana: it names the region, not one exact designation, and exact designations like Chianti or Brunello di Montalcino point to a much narrower patch. Argiano knows that narrower ground well, since the producer says its Montalcino estate was a founding member of the Consorzio del Brunello back in 1967.

Argiano's technical sheet for the 2024 vintage spells out what the label alone does not: this Toscana red blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese, grown on alluvial soil with veins of chalky marl at 280 to 310 meters of elevation, farmed organically. The producer starts with two days of skin contact before the main fermentation, then gives the wine a few months of time in French oak barrels that have already been used three or four times, so they add structure without heavy new-oak flavor. The finished wine lists 14 percent alcohol, and the estate's own winemaker, Bernardino Sani, describes it as “broad and enveloping, with a smooth texture, fine freshness, and elegant, silky tannins,” the producer's words.

Our call: this suits a shopper drawn to Argiano's name and craft, since the estate is a founding member of the Consorzio del Brunello and its own technical sheet lays out the blend, the organic farming and the oak treatment in full. Pass if a precise appellation matters more to you than the maker's reputation; Toscana is a broad regional label, not the estate's more exacting Brunello di Montalcino designation, and no shopper rating has reached our record yet to weigh in either way.
