What we make of this bottle
Nineteen seventy-three is the year Cakebread Cellars says Jack and Dolores Cakebread founded the winery in Rutherford. The wine is their Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. We do not have a shopper rating for this wine.
Napa Valley runs only about thirty miles, yet regional guides stress that its valley floor, hillsides and mountain benches ripen fruit under very different conditions. The climate is dry and Mediterranean: San Pablo Bay cools the southern end, afternoons warm toward the north, and overnight fog pulls temperatures down across much of the valley. It has been a federally recognized growing area since 1981, with seventeen smaller growing areas now sitting inside its boundary. Our September 2026 checks found it as low as $83.99.
At the upper end, those same September 2026 checks found $106.99. As regional guides put it, the Napa Valley name settles the origin, while a smaller district or a single vineyard inside it gives the closer reading of where the fruit grew.
Cakebread's own tech sheet for the 2022 vintage lists this wine's blend as 90 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc rounding it out, all sourced from Napa Valley, harvested by hand at night between August and October 2022. The wine spent 17 months in French oak; the sheet's own numbers disagree with each other on how much of that oak was new, stating 52 percent new oak in its data table and 48 percent new oak in its prose description, an inconsistency the document itself does not resolve. Winemaker Niki Williams oversaw the blend, and the finished wine lists at 14.5 percent alcohol.
Our call: a strong pick if a detailed producer account, specific blend percentages, harvest dates, a named winemaker, is what you look for at this price; Cakebread states real numbers rather than vague marketing language. Pass if you need a shopper rating to back your choice: none is on our record yet, so the producer's own account is what you'd be relying on.
