The company behind this Cabernet says it is based inside it: The Prisoner Wine Co. of Napa Valley, California, whose official site also confirms, in its footer, that the label is owned by Constellation Brands. Those are producer statements our research has verified for this wine, and the shelf adds its own numbers, a price that sat between $57.99 and $86.99 in checks dated August 12, 2026.

The valley name is doing two jobs at once here, and our region guide keeps them separate. On the company it is an address. On the wine it establishes origin, and the valley is the wide way to say it: a smaller federally recognized growing area or a named vineyard would say more exactly where, and this listing stays at the valley.

The wine carries 120 shopper ratings, and the average they settle to is 4.62 out of five. As for the grape, regional authorities treat Cabernet's fruit as a variable rather than a constant: ripeness, with climate and winemaking behind it, decides whether the wine stays slim and herbal or fills out until the dark fruit leads. Black currant is one of the standard reference points either way, and they call noticeable tannin common.

Why place inside the valley matters is worth spelling out. The climate is dry Mediterranean overall, but San Pablo Bay cools the southern end, summer afternoons grow warmer toward the north, and fog lowers overnight temperatures across much of the valley. The Prisoner Wine Co. also traces its name to a specific source: the company says its label draws on Francisco Goya's etching “Le Petit Prisonnier,” and that Director of Winemaking Todd Ricard sources fruit from more than 100 northern California growers for what the company calls its “rule-bending” style across its wines.

Our call: this suits the shopper buying the Napa Valley name with the reassurance of one of the larger rating pools we track behind it. Pass if you expect the scores to match the spend: for all its size, that pool averages below the middle of the rated wines we cover.
