Stags’ Leap Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Red Wine

By its own account, Stags' Leap Winery traces the first grapes planted on this Napa Valley property to 1872. The estate later changed hands: owner Carl Doumani sold it in 1996 to Beringer, and it now sits within Treasury Wine Estates. An early planting date and a present-day corporate owner are separate facts, and both belong to the name here.

Napa Valley runs only about thirty miles end to end, yet its valley floor, hillside, and mountain plantings sit under quite different conditions. The climate is dry and Mediterranean: cool water off San Pablo Bay tempers the southern end, afternoons turn warmer the farther north you go, and night fog brings temperatures down over much of the valley. The wider name marks where the grapes grew, while a smaller district or single vineyard would tell you more. seven stores had it on the shelf when we checked in September 2026, though we have no shopper rating for it. The winery's product page for the 2022 vintage gives the blend in full: 86 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, with Petit Verdot, Merlot, Malbec, Petite Sirah and Tannat filling out the rest in small percentages, at 14.1 percent alcohol. A quarter of the wine spends time in new French oak, the remainder in neutral French and American oak, for 19 months total. James Suckling scored the 2022 vintage at 93 points, citing "finely integrated tannins and balanced acidity" in a wine he called "very well constructed and fresh." The winery says the fruit for this Napa Valley bottling comes from selected growers across the valley floor, weighted toward the cooler southern end of Napa Valley.

That valley-floor sourcing is worth separating from the winery's own home ground. Stags' Leap Winery's estate sits within the Stags Leap District, a Napa sub-appellation named for a rock outcropping, the Stags Leap Palisades, that the winery says blocks early morning sun, holds afternoon heat and funnels cooler air in off San Pablo Bay, while shedding volcanic rock into the soil below. The district became its own federally recognized AVA in 1989, and wines that carry the district's name on the label must draw at least 85 percent of their fruit from inside it. This Napa Valley bottling, though, is a broader-appellation wine sourced from growers across the valley rather than the estate's own Stags Leap District blocks, which is why the label reads Napa Valley and not the narrower district name.

Our call: a strong pick if a full blend breakdown, oak treatment and a 93-point score from James Suckling are the kind of detail that earns a premium price; the winery states the 2022 blend down to the percentage and backs it with that critic score. Pass if the estate's own Stags Leap District pedigree is what you are actually paying for; this Napa Valley bottling draws from growers across the wider valley rather than the winery's home ground, and no shopper rating exists yet to weigh in alongside the critic.
