What does the grape name on a Cabernet actually promise? A little less than the shelf suggests. Our grape research treats Cabernet Sauvignon as a red grown in many wine regions, often built with real firmness and folded into blends. Guides give it currant, cherry and plum among its fruit references, tannin you can feel, and a note of spice where oak is used. Ripeness, climate and winemaking, the same research adds, can leave a Cabernet lean and herbal at one turn and broad and fruit-forward at another, so the name marks the grape and little about how any one bottle tastes.

Our regional research puts the valley at only about thirty miles long, yet describes its floor, hillsides and mountain sites as sharply different from one another, so the valley name fixes where the fruit grew while a smaller area or a single vineyard would place it more exactly. That research sets out a dry Mediterranean climate, with the cool of San Pablo Bay reaching the south, warmer afternoons toward the north, and fog that pulls overnight temperatures down. It counts the valley a federally recognized growing area since 1981, now holding seventeen smaller areas within it. Beaulieu Vineyard says Georges and Fernande de Latour bought their first Napa Valley land in 1900.

Beaulieu's product page for this bottling gives the blend precisely: 83 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, filled out with Malbec, Petite Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and aged in French oak, 30 percent of it new. The producer's own tasting language calls the wine “youthful and bright,” with blackberry, ripe plum and chocolate-covered cherry. Two outside critics quoted on the same page also rated it: Decanter.com gave it 94 points, and TheWinePalate.com gave it 90, both describing a full, dark-fruited style with firm tannin.

Beaulieu's own account fills in the pedigree behind the 1900 founding already on record. André Tchelistcheff, a Russian-born winemaker, led the estate's winemaking from 1938 to 1971, and the producer credits him with bringing malolactic fermentation for red wines and French oak aging to the property, practices that still shape the house style behind today's Cabernet Sauvignon.

Our call: buy it on the producer's account and the critics' word, if that combination is enough for you; Beaulieu names the exact blend behind this Cabernet and its oak program, and the page quotes two outside critics who scored it 94 and 90 points. Pass if you buy on the crowd's confirmation instead; no shopper rating has reached our record, so the case rests on the estate's own story and outside critics, not on other buyers.
