What we make of this bottle
A 750 ml bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, grown in California. Cabernet Sauvignon grows in many wine regions, and our grape research notes it often makes firmly built wines and turns up frequently in red blends. Regional authorities cite black currant, cherry and plum as the usual fruit references, with noticeable tannin and, where oak is involved, possible spice; how ripe the fruit gets and the climate behind it can steer the wine toward the lean and herbal or the broad and fruit-forward.
We do not have a shopper rating for this wine. The shelf price in our September 2026 checks ranged from $79.99 to $119.99. Behind the label stands one family: Caymus Vineyards says Chuck Wagner opened the winery in 1972 with his parents, Lorna and Charlie Wagner Sr., and it remains owned and run by the Wagner family.
Caymus's own page for this bottling describes it as the California-appellation Cabernet, launched with the 2021 vintage and drawing fruit from several regions beyond Napa: Paso Robles, and Lake, San Benito and Monterey Counties. The producer's stated winemaking philosophy points to “stony soils, south facing slopes and moderately warm conditions” as what it calls the keys to “producing dark, rich and good tasting Cabernet,” and it describes the finished wine as having “ripe fruit and luxurious tannins” that “reveals the Caymus character,” the producer's words, built to drink now or hold in a cellar. The page does not list an alcohol percentage or a producer's own price.
Our call: buy it if the Caymus name itself is the reason you are reaching for the bottle; this is the winery's broader California-appellation Cabernet, built on the same site-selection philosophy the family applies at its Napa Valley flagship, and it comes from a family that has run the operation since 1972. Pass if you want a shopper rating or a stated alcohol level; neither has reached our record for this bottle.
