What we make of this bottle
What is actually in a bottle labeled red blend? The producer's own product page now answers that question, and complicates the name on the label at the same time: Grounded Wine Co. lists this Public Radio bottling as 51 percent Syrah, 37 percent Grenache, 6.5 percent Mourvèdre and 5.5 percent Graciano, a Rhône-style blend led by Syrah even though the producer's own site names it a “Grenache Blend.” The brand behind it is on record too: Grounded Wine Co. says Josh Phelps, a Napa native, started the company as his own wine brand.
Our region guide describes Paso Robles as a very large appellation rather than a single uniform valley, a federally recognized AVA on California's Central Coast split into eleven named districts, with marine air pulled inland through gaps in the Santa Lucia Range and cooling that changes from west to east. We do not have a shopper rating for this wine. In our September 2026 checks the shelf price ranged from $32.49 to $33.99.
The producer's vintage notes describe an unusually wet winter followed by a cool, steady summer, and call 2023 the label's “first Syrah-dominant vintage.” After fermentation the wine spent 16 months in French oak, mostly in large casks called puncheons, a fifth of them new. The alcohol percentage is not listed on the producer's product page, and a downloadable tasting sheet linked from that page is an image file this research could not read for a number either, so the alcohol content for this bottle remains unconfirmed.
Our call: choose this if a fully disclosed Rhône-style blend is reason enough on its own; the producer now confirms the exact percentages, Syrah leading over Grenache despite the name on the label. Pass if an accurate name matters to you as much as an accurate blend, or if you want the alcohol percentage in hand before you buy; the producer has not published it, and there is no shopper rating on record either.

Paso Robles is a very large appellation, not one uniform valley. Coastal openings, mountains, river plains and elevation create different growing conditions across its districts.
What the name means
Paso Robles is a federally recognized American Viticultural Area in San Luis Obispo County on California's Central Coast. Eleven named districts divide the larger AVA.
How grapes grow here
Warm, dry summer days are followed by much cooler nights. The Templeton Gap and other openings in the Santa Lucia Range pull marine air inland, with the strength of that cooling changing from west to east.
What lies under the vines
More than 30 soil series occur in the AVA. Calcareous shale and other marine sedimentary rocks are important, alongside granite-derived, volcanic, sandy, loamy and clay-rich ground.
