What we make of this bottle
Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are two names for one white grape; our grape research treats the Italian and French words as the same vine, not two varieties. The label wording still tells a shopper something. Official guides say the Italian spelling is often chosen for a lighter, crisper style, while the French spelling can point to more body and texture. If a lighter, crisper white is what you came to the aisle for, that spelling is the signal those guides read, a common pattern rather than a promise. The guides describe pear, apple, citrus and stone fruit in the grape, with sweetness anywhere from dry to gently off-dry.
Gallo says the Maso Canali estate has grown Pinot Grigio since 1893, and that the brand makes a single wine. The Italy on the label is a country name; Italian vineyards sit everywhere from Alpine valleys to islands in the Mediterranean, so the word by itself does not narrow this bottle to one landscape.
