Barbera d'Asti joins one main grape rule to a broad area of Monferrato hills. The full DOCG name establishes the correct origin, while its optional subzones and the producer can add more local detail.
How grapes grow here
The production area crosses exposed hills in Asti and Alessandria. Slope, elevation and local soil affect the vineyards, so the DOCG name does not describe one identical growing site.
What lies under the vines
The consortium separates older pale soils found in several parts of Monferrato from the sandier ground around the Tanaro and central Asti hills. Individual vineyards can differ within both broad groups.
