What we make of this bottle

The name on this wine offers a shade, a style and a person's name, and no place at all. The place is Provence, in the southeast of France; that much is confirmed even though the name never mentions it. In our August 2026 checks, stores priced it anywhere from $13.99 to $23.99.

Regional guides describe Provence as a broad wine region with a Mediterranean climate: dry summers, steady sun, and a wind called the Mistral that can dry the air and cool the vineyards in its path. The region is not one uniform vineyard, though. Several separate protected appellations lie within it, and grapes grown by the coast do not grow under the same conditions as grapes in the inland hills or on higher ground, so a fuller place name narrows the guesswork.

We do not have a shopper rating for this wine, and the grape or grapes that go into it are unconfirmed.

The producer does describe how it is made. Chateau d'Esclans says the grapes for The Pale are picked at night, and the wine is made in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.
