Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris, and does the difference matter? They are two names for one white grape, and guides say the spelling mostly signals a style: Grigio often points to a lighter, crisper make and Gris to a rounder, more textured one, while the grape underneath stays the same. This wine uses the Grigio spelling. We have not confirmed where the fruit was grown. Across the stores we checked in September 2026, the lowest regular price we saw was $18.99.

The top of that same September 2026 range came to $24.99. For what the grape tends to give, guides reach for pear, apple, citrus and stone fruit, and a sweetness that can land anywhere from dry to gently off-dry. Whitehaven says the winery was founded in 1994 by Greg and Sue White and remains family owned today. We do not have a shopper rating for this wine, so is the lighter, crisper Grigio style the one to reach for here, or not?

Whitehaven's current US-facing site describes itself as exclusively crafting Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough fruit, and its 'Our Wines' page lists only two bottlings, both Sauvignon Blanc; no Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris appears anywhere in its current lineup, product navigation, or site map. A separate site under the same name, whitehaven.co.nz, does list a 2024 Whitehaven Marlborough Pinot Gris, the alternate spelling common in New Zealand labeling, but nothing on either site confirms that Pinot Gris and the Pinot Grigio sold here are the same wine, so its technical sheet stays unattached to this bottle for now.

What the US site does confirm at the company level: Whitehaven was founded in 1993, a year earlier than this record previously had it, by Greg and Sue White after they sailed the Pacific and found Marlborough. Sue White still leads the winery, and Peter Jackson, a former lawyer who switched to winemaking after cycling through French wine country, is chief winemaker. By 2015 the estate held more than 100 hectares across Marlborough's three sub-regions, and the winery has been certified under New Zealand's sustainable winegrowing program since 2009.

Our call: reasonable if the Grigio-style promise and the Whitehaven name are enough on their own; the producer's US site describes a family-run Marlborough house with real estate holdings and sustainability credentials behind its wines. Pass if you want the specific bottle confirmed against the maker's own account; Whitehaven's current US site does not list a Pinot Grigio at all, and we have not confirmed that the Pinot Gris on its New Zealand site is this exact wine.
