Bogle Vineyards Essential Red Wine

Bogle Essential is a red from a California family winery. Bogle says the family planted its first wine grapes in 1968; the first wine to carry the family name came a decade later, in 1978.

The shelf price is not the same from store to store. In our September 2026 checks it was as high as $14.99 at one store and as low as $10.99 at another.

Bogle's fact sheet for the 2023 vintage names the blend behind the label: 44 percent Petite Sirah, 32 percent Teroldego, 15 percent Syrah and 9 percent Zinfandel, though the producer is clear the mix is 'crafted each year' from whatever grapes performed best, so a later vintage could differ. The fruit comes from three regions in the northern Central Valley, Dunnigan Hills, Clarksburg and Lodi, and the finished wine lists 14.5 percent alcohol with a pH of 3.76. The producer ages it 12 months in a combination of American and French oak, and its own tasting notes describe bramble berry, ripe plum and boysenberry fruit with vanilla, mocha and a hint of tiramisu from the oak, finishing with what the sheet calls 'refined, chalky tannins.'

Our call: this suits a shopper who likes knowing exactly what is in the blend; Bogle's fact sheet spells out the four grapes and their percentages for the current vintage, down to the sourcing region. Pass if you want that blend to stay the same bottle to bottle: the producer changes the mix every year by design, and no shopper rating has reached our record yet to confirm how the current version is landing.
