What we make of this bottle
This is an Australian red made from Syrah, the grape written as Shiraz here. Australia on the label marks the country and not one vineyard: regional guides note the country's vineyards spread from cool coastal and high-altitude spots to hot inland country, so a single national name cannot pin down one growing season or temperature, and the official register holds narrower state, zone, region and subregion names as well. Those guides describe Syrah as dark berry, plum, pepper and savory in the glass, medium to full in body and firm in structure, with cooler sites leaning peppery and fresh and warmer ones riper and heavier. As for the maker, Casella Family Brands says Yellow Tail launched in 2001, from a family company based in Yenda, New South Wales.

The producer's own product page for this bottling describes an aroma of "concentrated red cherry and plum complemented by vanilla, mocha, and spice notes," with a flavor the producer calls "rich and smooth, with juicy red berries and hints of vanilla and spice," consistent with the dark-berry, spice-driven style regional guides already place on Shiraz. The producer lists the wine at 13.5 percent alcohol, certifies it vegan-friendly, and suggests pairing it "with steak or in front of a roaring fire." Casella Family Brands' own pages trace the company back to Filippo and Maria Casella, who left Sicily for Yenda, New South Wales, though the pages disagree on the founding year, naming both 1969 and 1957; John Casella took over in 1995 and built that base into the 2001 launch of Yellow Tail.
Our call: worth a look for a shopper who wants an inexpensive, vegan-friendly Shiraz and is comfortable leaning on the producer's own tasting notes, since Casella describes concentrated cherry, plum and spice in the glass and it sits among the least expensive reds we track.
